Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend, providing companionship and unconditional love to their owners. However, not all dogs are lucky enough to be treated with the care and respect they deserve. Some are forced to live in abusive and neglectful environments, leaving them with physical and emotional scars that may never heal.

This was the case for two dogs rescued by DIOZ inspectors in Rząsin. These poor animals spent 12 years on a chain, never experiencing freedom or human affection. Ferox, the male dog, was particularly affected by the constant enslavement. The vegetation on his tether had ruined his psyche, leading to frequent episodes of auto-aggression that caused him to scalp almost the entire tail. All he had left was a small stump that was oozing blood and pus.

The other dog, who lived in a different part of the property, had no kennel and was forced to live in a leather jacket that had been thrown on the bare threshing floor 12 years ago. According to the owner, this dog had been struggling to breathe for at least six years, but no effort was made to provide medical attention to him.

Upon their rescue, both dogs were given medical attention. Ferox was diagnosed with severe mental health issues, for which psychotropic therapy was implemented. Due to the extent of his injuries, he required an operation to amputate the rotted stump of his tail. However, even with medical intervention, his condition remains dire as he does not respond to some of the medications he is given.

The other dog, however, was found to have extensive lung cancer, a 15 cm spleen tumor, and heart failure. Unfortunately, his condition was so severe that he had to be euthanized.

The owner of the dogs may face up to three years in prison for gross negligence. The DIOZ inspectors have informed the prosecutor’s office about the case and will continue to monitor the situation.

Despite the tragedy of these two dogs, there is hope. DIOZ is committed to providing Ferox with the best possible care to help him heal from his emotional trauma. The organization is working tirelessly to help him trust humans again, even after all he has endured.

The story of Ferox and his friend highlights the importance of animal welfare and the need for stricter laws to protect animals from cruelty and neglect. No animal deserves to suffer in the way these dogs did, and it is up to us as a society to take action and ensure that animals are treated with the respect and kindness they deserve.
